BETWEEN THE LINES: Richard Clarke, Fifty Dad Tales

Richard Clarke’s Fifty Dad Tales: A Light-hearted Memoir of Short Stories Without the Boring Bits represents a detour for the author, moving away from children’s fiction into adult territory. Drawing inspiration from his own children, the book captures a series of nostalgic vignettes from Clarke’s life in a warm, humorous, and deeply personal manner.
Sport permeates the core of the book, specifically Clarke’s semi-pro football career and his life as a PE teacher. The narrative takes a dramatic turn in 1988; at just 19 years old and training to be a teacher, Clarke suffered a freak, severe leg injury. Doctors delivered the devastating news that his teaching aspirations and playing days were effectively over.
Refusing to accept this prognosis, Clarke underwent gruelling surgery and rehabilitation. Eventually, aided by a foot calliper, he managed to both return to the pitch and fulfill his dream of teaching. His football career reached a unique pinnacle when he captained Bradford-based Albion Sports in a National FA Sunday Cup final—making him the first footballer to do so while wearing a foot calliper.
The book balances this story of resilience with the everyday joys of raising four children. The fifty "shortish" anecdotes are framed by his children’s questions during the school run, sparking memories that range from growing up in 1970s Bradford and his 1980s footballing heyday to scrapes while following his beloved Leeds United.
Throughout these memoirs, Clarke maintains a sentimental yet grounded tone, covering his life-altering injury with a healthy dose of Yorkshire grit. By intertwining his "never say die" journey with the candid, often funny dynamics of family life, Clarke has created a memoir that is as much about the power of determination as it is about the simple beauty of nostalgia.
Creatively purposed, it’s an enjoyable read and you can sense the cathartic nature throughout Clarke’s humour filled stories. You’ll even get to understand the “Magpie” escape hatch word!
Growing up in the same era, I also gained inspiration for my own writing journey too!
Clarke has penned three other books, being the ‘Calm Pond’ series, aimed at 5 to 11 year olds. Each contains nine short stories about a group of creatures who live near the author’s home in Blackstone Edge, which is on the border between Yorkshire and Lancashire.
