WAYFARING GEAR: SURI - Together in Electric Cleans

SURI, short for Sustainable Rituals, is a UK based toothbrush provider company founded in 2021 by two former Procter & Gamble employees.

Its philosophy is centred around sustainability and circularity, addressing the significant plastic waste associated with dental products, particularly toothbrushes that end up in landfills.

A Brush with…

Accordingly a toothbrush was designed with a modular and repairable design made of recyclable aluminium, with Plant-Based Heads (cornstarch brush heads and castor oil based bristles) and an innovative Take-Back Scheme, where users can return used heads for industrial composting and recycling.

The initial product release was the SURU 1.0, which I picked up in 2023, primarily to use as a travel toothbrush given the positive reviews and its compact size (it has a slim footprint, being around 1/3rd the size of a normal electric brush).

It also comes with a travel friendly case which also has a rather neat function, namely a built in UV light which can be switched on to kill 99% of bacteria on the bristles whilst you charge it up.

The brush’s technology is underpinned by the use sonic vibrations to aid cleaning, rather than the rotating brush head of the Oral-B competitor offering.

Battery life is exceptional, providing over 40 days of use from a single charge.

Available in a range of colours (midnight black, green fern, mist, sunset bloom, morning waves) this is a handsome and sleek product which is also easy to manoeuvre when cleaning and there are two speed settings (gentle or deep) that can be used.

The Feeling…

Coming from Oral-B territory I found the brush to be an excellent alternative, leaving my teeth with a very clean feeling after use. I also value the longevity of each charge.

"In a world of information noise, SURI offers a quiet signal. You won't find apps or Bluetooth here—just an intentionally simple, award-winning design that does one thing exceptionally well."

The SURI 2.0 has recently been launched which retains all the key features of the 1.0 but with more durable casing, the addition of a Pressure Sensor, which helps avoid gum damage from overly zealous brushing, together with a improved motor (more power and quieter) and a pivot to magnetic, wireless USB-C charging.

The offering is also now separated out such that it can be purchased with or without the UV-C travel case, the non-travel case version coming with a small USB-A power charger and small magnetic stand.

The website also offers gift packs and bundles, replacement heads (compatible with both 1.0 and 2.0 and costing £15 for 3) as well as a flouride-free toothpaste offering, Restore, which I haven’t tried yet.

Overall a sleek and sustainable product that is an essential part of my Wayfaring travel kit.

Teething Issues: My 2023 purchase recently developed some casing deterioration recently and having contacted the SURI Customer Service helpline, I was promptly and efficiently helped with a replacement.

Despite being beyond the warranty period I was offered a new 1.0 replacement for a small cost in return for sending the original product back for recycling. The replacement arrived a matter of days after first contacting them, so excellent customer service from them, and re-assuring to know the recycling will be taken care of too!
