At a loose end one Sunday afternoon, we ducked into Skipton’s Mess Room to sample the taps and scout out the local live scene. Arriving just before 4:00 PM, we were perfectly timed for a 4:30 PM set by Beach Club, a father-and-son duo from Huddersfield.

The Venue: History Meets Bohemia

Housed in a Grade II listed former fire station, the venue has undergone a significant transformation in the recent past. The versatile layout consists of:

  • The Main Bar: A welcoming initial landing spot upon entry.

  • The "Big Mess": A larger, bohemian hall at the rear used for gigs and events. The aesthetic here is pure "shabby-chic" soul—think fabric-draped walls, fringed chandeliers, and a warm glow provided by tea lights and fairy-tale strings.

  • The Walled Garden: A covered outdoor space to the side of the entrance, which plays host to acoustic sets during the summer months.

On Tap & Atmosphere

The lived-in feel of the "Big Mess" holds around 120 for standing gigs but easily pivots to a more intimate cabaret layout.

The bar aims to bridge the gap between the "usual suspects" and a well-curated craft and real ale selection which includes:

  • Ossett Brewery: Favorites like White Rat and Blonde.

  • Craven Brew Co: A punchy NEIPA.

  • Salt Beer Factory: Rotating guest selections.
