This Is Where I Leave You is the debut album from Norwegian singer-songwriter Maren Davidsen and I’m pleased to be able to cup a North of Here ear over the eight-track offering.
CRYSTAL CLEAR: Maren Davidsen

Maren Davidsen’s story began in Stavanger, Norway where she was born. An early introduction to the guitar, age six, saw her grow up with a musical background, delving into the classic works of Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler and Willie Nelson.
An eight year stint in London saw music infiltrate her life as she moved into her adult years. The release of singles in 2021 (“Damage Done”) and 2022 (“Back To You”, “Love Gone Breezy”, “Doctor’s Orders”, “Potential (Catch Feelings)" tested the water for her offering of Nordic Americana with country and folk influences
In tandem with further single releases (“My Love, My War” and “Friday Night Lie”) 2023 became something of a watershed. With a realisation that Oslo could offer a creative hub to fully pursue her songwriting and musical direction, Maren moved back to Norway and the beginnings of what became her debut album, This Is Where I Leave You, began to take shape.
THE BEGINNING OF AN END: This Is Where I Leave You

It’s been quite some journey. Recording for This Is Where I Leave You began in September 2023 and continued throughout 2024 and 2025 across several studios in Oslo.
But Maren wanted to get things exactly right.
Engaging a full band under the expert production assistance of Martin Vinje, who has worked with the likes of fellow Norwegians Sigrid, Maria Sahba and Neon Ion, the resulting album has triumphantly resulted in a definitive statement of Maren’s artistic intent.
EP Forehead Kiss released in July 2026 foreshadowed four of the album’s tracks (“Forehead Kiss”, “Cleveland Street”, “Tennessee On My Mind” and “Love Of The Century”), laying down the emotional foundations for the remainder of the album.
Appropriately, with shades of her own journey, the title of the album is about new beginnings—whether it is leaving another person behind or casting away the version of herself that settled for second best, it creates a canvas that the deep brushstrokes of the album’s emotions, heartbreak and change vividly capture.

Love Of The Century
Opening track, “Love Of The Century” commences in reflective mood musing on the advice of “Amelia” (“She wants me to let go, find peace in my own zone”), the atmosphere building gradually before the full band join the song.
Inhabiting a similar mellow and stripped back vibe to the folklore & evermore worlds of Taylor Swift, it’s powerful, hook-filled chorus “It might not be love of the century” elevates both the volume and emotional power of its message.
It Takes Two
Seemingly in full stride now, “It Takes Two” sees Maren’s lush vocals applied to rich, organic and textural sonic landscape which underpins the song’s candid dilemmas of love’s dual responsibilities. Its emotional punch-wrapped use of “Two” throughout the song, and falsetto ending, ultimately brings home the denouement.
Forehead Kiss
Recalling Gracie Abrams at her most vulnerable, “Forehead Kiss” laments the pain of being under-appreciated and feeling second-best. The uplifted vocal chorus towards the back of the song beautifully plants much more then a forehead kiss as it exposes the stressful situation in full clarity.
“I don’t want to fight for a minute of bliss.”
Cleveland Street
More contradictions, madness and chaos infiltrate “Cleveland Street”—the pressing need to leave aligns with the theme of the overall album—Maren’s aching but assured vocal tells its story and the conclusion, “Take him he’s yours”, hits with a thud.
Man Of The Hour
The rhythmic chug of “Man Of The Hour” beats like a ticking clock, as time is called on a relationship with an unnecessarily elevated partner (“Does it feel good having all the power?”). The album’s crisp production really sparkles here as Maren’s repeated chant and fuzzed guitar spill out into the close.
Comedown Of My Lifetime
The subjects of craving and cavings permeate “Comedown Of My Lifetime”, its soul inflected stylings garnish the song impeccably, creating a sonic shiver that mirrors the body shivers brought on in the comedown the song charts.
Its tastefully stripped back, but remains fully formed, as the chorus eventually explodes with heartbreak and reaches a powerful climax before a more restrained piano and guitar gently transport the comedown away.
Dimensions
An emotional pinnacle of the album, “Dimensions” captures its intent in full high definition resolution. From its gentle plucked string opening, Maren’s vocal instantly transports the song into a different dimension—it’s crystalline, it’s purely filtered, but it remains laced with emotion as it gracefully steps from the real world to an alternate world where love can exist.
“It is a song about forbidden love, escape, and the strange grief of knowing that something was real, even though it could never fully exist in the world around you.”
Tennessee On My Mind
Ending the album, the wistful fiddle of “Tennessee On My Mind” snakes its way across the track.
Fittingly the song charts an uplifting and full-of-hope end in the wake of the “It’s time to leave you behind” sentiment.
With a stripped back vocal drawing the song to its close, it becomes clear that whilst our protagonist might not know exactly “what I’m doing here”, optimism and time mean that “finally leaving you behind” will soon lead to a better day.
————————————
Thematically each of the album’s eight songs are firmly bound together with the threads of having to move on and start again. They cover the raw pain and emotion leading up to this—Maren’s vocal delivery channels the journey and musically Martin Vinje ensures that the navigation is performed with a musical sure-footedness.
MOVING ON: What’s Next?
What’s next for Maren Davidsen? (Image: Julia Maks)
Maren Davidsen bares her soul on this well-crafted and emotionally poignant album.
The care and time taken to record it has truly reaped dividends.
Fans of Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, First Aid Kit and Kacey Musgroves will find much to admire in this collection of eight immaculately written and produced songs.
And with the promise of a new album due to be recorded in 2027 and further live performances, the future has a sparkling shine to it.
In the meantime, the debut album can be found on all the usual streaming platforms and it is well worth investing a listen to this talented Norwegian singer-songwriter.
